The cover announces that the Little Bitch is Back! Somehow, that doesn't really show itself too much in this issue. I consider it (the issue), if anything, a bridging story... a sort of, this is what's been happening since last we saw our heroes Kick Ass (yes, he's here too) and Hit Girl.
More interesting - and a nice touch at that, is how Mindy McCready is trying (and the nominal word here is 'trying') to adjust to the 'normal' life - which means she isn't exempt from proverbial bitchiness from other girls in her school. Apparently, all her training has not prepared her for such things, and there's a poignant scene where she visits her dad's grave, asking him how she can fight such a situation. Ironic that Mindy, despite all her deadly skills, is not immune to bullying. I shall be interested to see how this gets addressed. Meanwhile, she comes up with a plan and into an agreement with Kick Ass. She teaches him her fighting skills so they can both be real heroes - and he teaches her to be 'normal'.
Mindy's also been busy updating the crime family's organization chart, as new faces come in to fill the vacuum. I won't go into further details about this issue - but one thing I will say is I like the pacing (as an introductory/ catch up story), Mark hits the right buttons, and he does remind us (via flashbacks) how deadly Hit Girl can be, The comic book references of the Punisher, Batman and Robin are likewise a nice touch. As for the art... well, I'm really not a fan of John Romita Jr. Never was... but I gave this a try none the less, and I can say that it looks a bit cleaner here - not much to show a very dramatic change - but cleaner enouhg for me to not find it too distracting to my enjoyment of the issue.
All in all, I'd give this issue a 31/2 stars out of 5. I'll also pick up issue 2 of this, when it comes out.
On a relatively unrelated portion. I also liked the preview of The Secret Service #3 (another Millar title I'm following) and the brief mention of Millar in Manila, and the promise of giving more details of his trip to my neck of the woods.
Hit Girl is printed under Icon, though the inside cover credits mention Marvel as it's printer. So yes, it basically is under the Marvel Icon group. As the above picture I used points out, I copied (or lifted) the issue's cover from the CBR site (the Little Bitch reference is from another cover... one that can be clearly seen in the CBR review itself.
