Obstacles Welcome - a book review

Obstacles Welcome
Ralph de la Vega (with Paul B. Brown) - authors
Thomas Nelson - Publisher

What’s good about a book by Ralph de la Vega? As a CEO he knows how busy people can be – he understands the importance of presenting his messages with clarity and focus, plus illustrations that add to the reader’s understanding. ‘Obstacles Welcome’ has all this in spades - plus something akin to an executive summary at every chapter’s end – how cool is that?

I tried reading the summary of two middle chapters first, just to test ‘If I were a very busy person, would this in itself give me the ideas that Ralph wishes to convey?’ Yes they did. However, if anyone simply did this, they would miss out on the main course of ‘Obstacles Welcome’, which is Ralph’s way of conveying the ‘whys’ of such ideas.

Like any great teacher or mentor, Ralph does not leave anything to chance, making sure that everything he communicates is clear. His necessary points in the book’s early chapters make for the proper foundation to his ideas in the succeeding ones. ‘You Get What you Measure’, ‘Spotting Opportunities’ and ‘Make the Journey About More Than You’, to name a few – are filled with his practices, beliefs, ideas and guideposts that any aspiring CEO should consider – that last one even introduces his Leadership Capability Model.

Ralph constantly reminds us that ‘A Vision without Action is just an Idea’. That said, I strongly suggest you buy this book and read it by next quarter. Make it a ‘must do’ goal. You’ll definitely thank Ralph (and me, hopefully) for it
