Just Who is Steev Rogers - part 5

Hawkeye, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver… three ex-villains wanting to turn a new leaf – so they claimed, were now interested in becoming Avengers. As Cap was just getting used to the idea of being part of the team that had found and revived him, and with the Zemo affair behind him, he could concentrate on integrating himself into this new team. The Avengers, however, do the unexpected and all decide to have a break – leaving him in charge of these three new recruits. Steve neither knew them, nor anything about them, yet he was tasked to turn them into heroes worthy of the name Avengers… and even this, was vague at best, with exception to using the charter as his guide.
Unlike Iron man, Thor and Giant man – these three did not have the seeming experience and confidence that comes with such a heroic life. It would be argued that even Janet showed a more outgoing – though less serious personality than Wanda Add to that the fact that brashness, hot headedness and bravado seemed to be the common characteristics of these would-be heroes – at least, two of them anyway. Whatever Steve had as his idea of being a fulltime Avenger… this nursemaid duty was definitely not what he had in mind.
To make matters more challenging, Clint and Pietro were likewise seeing who could be the better Avenger, and neither seemed to respect Cap as leader-material. Obviously, his role as a living legend was not enough credence to how they thought of him – call it a generation gap, but they only head of Captain America, and what they heard or read, they took as exaggerations from the people telling the stories. If anything, Steve was looked upon as a fossil – a person with an outdated way of thinking, hence of dealing with situations. Little surprise therefore that their first few missions did not come across as clockwork, and friction seemed the order of the day.
This experience would make Steve question his capability to lead, specially since he still felt the need to adjust to his new surroundings. Equally weighing heavy on Steve’s mind would be his role in the modern world – as Steve Rogers. To understand this, we have to realize that during the war – the role of Captain America was, to Steve, a full time vocation – yet during off-days, he still had his life as Private Steve Rogers, where he would watch a movie with Bucky or just be himself.
In this new world, he did not have those casual connections, and despite their seeming noble intents, the Avengers were still strangers to him, so needed to discover who he really was, and what to do in his ‘down-time’ as Steve Rogers.
Steve did not feel too comfortable living for too long under another man’s house – eating out of the kindness of this same man’s food, and being served by this gentleman’s gentleman. To Steve, the mansion was the Avengers quarters – it was where Avengers could meet before action… more like an H.Q and debrief each other before finally leaving for their own respective lives – it was definitely not a home. Perhaps this was also supported by the fact that no Avenger stayed in the mansion – and even if Jarvis felt glad and honored for the company of Cap, Cap felt uncomfortable getting ‘charity’ from others, in this case – Tony Stark and his estate/foundation.
Steve would then decide to contact one of the few people he knew from the war days, a man whom he’d fought side-by-side with and who now seemingly commanded the modern day’s most elite fighting unit… S.H.I.E.L.D. Steve needed to talk to Nick Fury to see other options, should he decide to quit the Avengers – or at the least, look for something to do in between Avengers missions. It would allow Steve to have more freedom away from the mansion – from Hawkeye and Pietro. But more importantly, Nick Fury was someone who could relate to Steve’s war time experience – both of them having shared some missions together.
Those early days as the kooky quartet were trying on Steve’s patience, and at times, said patience would wear thin. Cap even called it quits for a while, but they eventually made up for everything by acting as a team when the situation demanded it the most. In one instance, Cap even gambled his life – jumping off a skyscraper to let Clint and company act as a team – to the dismay of the Swordsman, the person they were then currently fighting, and the Mandarin – who happened to be the schemer in charge of Swordsman’s attempts to infiltrate the Avengers..
Eventually, Cap did get to contact Fury, who was more than welcome to have this ‘not so old’ war veteran, fight alongside S.H.I.E.L.D.’s agents. Though Cap eventually would not quit the Avengers, he now had some familiar faces to swap war stories with – and Fury, Dum Dum and a handful of others would willingly accommodate Steve, and use him and his capabilities, as an asset in some of their counter terrorist offensives – foremost of which would be against a terrorist organization called Hydra.
One of these early operations would let Steve bump into a very young and lovely S.H.I.E.L.D. recruit who would go by the mysterious call sign of ‘Agent 13’… this while Steev tried evading the feet of a Savate master – Batroc. Though Steve and Agent 13 hardly had any time together – what little they shared of this seemingly platonic attraction was enough to make Cap fall for her and vice versa. Of course we couldn’t blame them, since more often than not they would often bump into each other in stressful circumstances.
To Steve, Agent 13 was a very courageous woman, and what even made her more courageous, was the fact that she had no powers at all. She was selfless in any actions that her missions needed of her. Another less known reason Steve seemed attracted to Agent 13? She reminded him of a very young and attractive American whom he met while working with the French resistance fighters – one who’s name he had not had the chance of getting. You could say that to Steve, this seemed like a second chance at ‘what might have been, if…’, so its no surprise that he did not make this opportunity go away.
To Agent 13, Cap was obviously a very different person – confident and capable, yet very vulnerable with his ‘man out of time’ situation. Their first adventure, as mentioned, happened to be against Batroc the Leaper – and this was certainly not their last. Sharon Carter would likewise look forward to her other adventures with Captain America,
Fury may have been a bit uncomfortable with Steve being too close to Agent 13, not because he did not want the friendship to turn into a more serious relationship, but because he knew the danger that their job carried. Knowing Cap, he also knew that there would be missions where S.H.I.E.L.D. would be in questionable moral grounds – and this could put their (his and Steve’s) budding friendship in hot water – he might also have felt that Sharon would be more a distraction to Steve during missions. But Fury did nothing, seemingly respecting Cap too much, after all he likewise observed that Sharon and Steve were having strains on their relationship.
Steve wanted Sharon to quit S.H.I.E.L.D. and possibly take up a less dangerous job and naturally, Sharon did not want Steve imposing on her career. Though at times rocky, the two were able to iron things out. At the height of their relationship, Sharon brought Steve to her home in Virginia to meet her family and this turned out into a bit of an awkward moment, since they both discovered that Steve, and Sharon’s much older sister – Peggy, knew each other during the war – specifically when Peggy was working with the French resistance.
Yup, Peggy was said young American with the French resistance, whom Steve once fancied But being the trooper that she was, Peggy (whom Sharon admired so much and thus joined S.H.I.E.L.D. to somehow follow in her older sister’s footsteps) let Sharon enjoy the relationship with Steve which fate had robbed her of.
Said relationship would not last though - in one adventure involving Sharon working undercover with a white supremacist faction named the ‘National Force’, Sharon was believed to have died – committing suicide, while in action, and her self-sacrifice was captured by tape, which Nick Fury showed to Steve. Thus Captain America thought Agent 13 as dead – but unknown to Steve, Sharon was actually in a secret mission – one that turned sour and she was believed killed. This time even Fury believed Sharon died as well, and decided to keep her last adventure a secret from Steve.
Many Marvel readers know that fate and destiny seem strong with Steve Rogers – somehow I can imagine Master Order and Lord Chaos observing Captain America, and their possible intervention could probably be seen from that fact that Steve’s suspended animation was a way for the universe to balance things. Think about it… during Steve’s last adventure prior to his and Bucky’s being captured by Zemo, Cap had finally stopped the Red Skull and left him for dead.Through by some twist of fate, Cap’s main antagonist would find some way to cheat time and death (by way of an experimental gas leakage in his bunker putting him in suspended animation prior to his death) – and resurface to place some grand schemes, some doomsday plan should the Reich fail… thus a fourth Sleeper was revived. Isn’t it odd that the Skull accidentally went into suspended animation – then only to be accidentally followed by Cap into the modern world? Coincidence? You tell me… But once again, Cap was around to foil the Skull’s plans and did defeat said robot.
But the Skull had ways of suddenly reappearing to torment Captain America – and in one instance, he would get a hold of a very powerful item – the Cosmic Cube. With said cube, his every wish was granted, and he proceeded to make Steve’s life miserable – by exchanging places with Steve (he in Steve’s body and Steve in Schmidt’s), but being Captain America was not just a body, and the personality of Steve Rogers would meet Sam Wilson – soon to be the Falcon, and long time friend/partner to Captain America, even if he (Sam) would seemingly be a sleeper agent for the Skull. Steve helped train Sam Wilson and later help him in becoming the hero known as the Falcon, and Cap’s new partner.
